Q: What is a HERS Rater?
A: The HERS Rater is a person who is certified to measure the energy using characteristics of a home and provides a rating report. A HERS Rater can perform home energy audits, ENERGY STAR New Home testing/inspections, Energy Efficient Mortgage testing, IECC blower door and duct testing and other building science related testing and inspections.


Q: How does one become a certified HERS Rater?
A: 1) Take a HERS Rater training class by a RESNET Accredited Training Provider, pass the national online rater test and then find a Rating Provider to complete your remaining 3 probationary ratings and certification.

2) Challenge the national online rater test, complete the 2 required probationary ratings with a RESNET Accredited Training Provider and then find a Rating Provider to complete your remaining 3 probationary ratings and certification.

Q: I am BPI certified, do I have to take the HERS rater class for certification?
A: Partially. You are not required to take the entire HERS Rater class, but the standards state that 2 of your probationary ratings must be conducted by a Training Provider.


Q: I am BPI certified, do I have to take the HERS rater test for certification?
A: YES. Every individual seeking certification as a HERS Rater must pass the national online core test.
